Doctoral Studies

1) Doctoral students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering:

register for the subject DY02 “Tutor-led Foreign Language Consultations for Doctoral Students” with individual tutors depending on their specialisation, see ‘Guarantors of individual specialisations’ below, in the first semester of their course. Doctoral students have the right to 6 teaching hours of consultation time within the framework of the DY02 subject.

Doctoral students select 120 pages (or 150 including images) of a specialised publication which is related to their field of study as their personal study material. They bring the publication for approval to their first consultation.

Doctoral students work on written assignments (based on instructions given by their tutor) and upload them to the DY02 course in the Moodle environment. If their assignments are accepted, students gain a credit for the DY02 subject. The deadline for the submission of assignments is the final day of tuition in a given semester.

Doctoral students arrange the date of their DY01 exam with their tutor. For information on the contents of the exam, please ask your tutor.

2) Doctoral students from other BUT faculties:

register directly with the subject tutor via e-mail: doctoral students from the Faculty of Architecture with PhDr. Daňková or Mgr. Tluková, Ph.D., doctoral students from the Institute of Forensic Engineering with Mgr. Vévodová, and doctoral students from the Faculty of Fine Arts with Mgr. Tluková, Ph.D.

Information for doctoral students from the Faculty of Architecture can be found here.

All tuition takes place at the Institute of Social Sciences, building Z, Žižkova 17, 2nd floor.

Under no circumstances is it possible to acknowledge any language tests taken outside the doctoral study programme during a student’s doctoral studies (unlike in the case of bachelor´s and master´s courses) because the exam is specific to and focuses on each individual doctoral student and his/her dissertation thesis. The preparation for the doctoral exam involves reading a specialised publication dealing with the topic of the student’s dissertation thesis, with the study of specialised terminology, style and useful collocations from the area of academic English. The aim of the exam is to prove that the doctoral student is able to read any specialised literature from his/her field of study and understand its text correctly (without any misinterpretation).
