Meeting about Advanced Level English lessons in Winter-Spring 2016

18.01.2016 19:14

All students who are interested in attending these advanced level courses:

  • the BYA21 lower advanced (around B2 level) general English course
  • the BYA22 advanced (B2 - C1 level) general English conversation course

…should come to a meeting on Thursday 11th February in room Z250 at 14:00.

At the meeting we will decide on times for the classes that suit the most people. At least 10 students must be able to attend at any one time for either of the classes to run.

About the offered courses

BYA21 is a general English course, NOT an exam course. It has a similar structure to BYA3-BYA8 and BYA20. There will be a lot of speaking but also a focus on grammar. Listening and vocabulary will also be covered. The BY52 exam often needed for the Erasmus + programme is based on material covered in this course (and in BYA7, BYA8 and BYA20), although this course is also suitable for people just wishing to practice their English so they don’t get rusty.

BYA22 is a general English conversation course, NOT an exam course. The focus will mainly be on speaking on various topics while covering a wide range of modern English vocabulary and phrases. The topics range from those with direct relevance to students' present and future lives to areas of general interest not covered fully in BYA7, 8, 20 and 21. If it runs, a second course of the same type, BYA23, will open in September. The course is particularly for those students who have already passed the FCE exam or have done BYA20/21.

Homework will be given during both courses. Some of it will take the form of Cambridge exam practice, vocabulary and reading tasks. All homework will be completely OPTIONAL and is meant to provide 'extra value' for students who may be interested in the BY52 exam, FCE or just expanding their knowledge further.

FAST students must have the BY51 exam (and an unused free semester too) to attend the course for free; there will be a special BY51 exam session on Friday 19th February for students who need the exam so they can attend courses.

Other people from outside FAST are also welcome to attend, though in many cases they will need to pay for the course. If you are an FA student you can attend these courses for free providing you have free semesters and you haven’t done the BY51 or BY52 exams yet – otherwise, the FA won’t pay for you. For information on payment please check this address:

If you would like to attend the course but can’t come to the meeting, please e-mail Mr Turland at, letting him know the hours when you are free, so we can take them into account when deciding if and when the course will open.
